Privacy Policy
VanFolio is a desktop-first writing app. Your drafts, vault content, exports, snapshots, and local backups stay on your device by default. Some features — license activation, optional AI, and update checks — require a network connection and are described below.
1. What Stays on Your Device
The following data is created and stored locally on your machine. VanFolio does not transmit this data to any server.
- All Markdown files and vault content you create or open
- Version history snapshots and local backups
- Export outputs (PDF, DOCX, HTML, PNG)
- App settings and preferences
- License metadata (stored locally so Pro works offline after activation)
- AI provider API keys (stored using OS-backed encrypted storage where supported)
VanFolio does not read, index, or upload your writing under any circumstances.
2. When VanFolio Uses the Network
VanFolio makes network requests only for specific features:
- License activation and validation — when you activate, deactivate, or verify a Pro license key via Lemon Squeezy
- App update checks — to notify you when a new version is available
- Support emails — only when you choose to contact us directly
All other operations, including writing, previewing, and exporting, work fully offline.
3. Purchases and License Activation
VanFolio uses Lemon Squeezy as its Merchant of Record and payment processor. When you purchase a license:
- Lemon Squeezy collects your name, email address, billing address, and payment details
- VanFolio receives purchase confirmation and license metadata needed to activate and support your account
- We do not have access to your full payment card details
License metadata (key, activation status, expiry) is stored locally on your device so Pro features remain available offline after activation. License validation requests are sent to Lemon Squeezy servers to verify and manage your license.
4. Support Requests
When you contact us at support@vanfolio.app, we collect:
- Your email address
- Any information or diagnostic details you choose to include
We use this information solely to respond to your request. We do not share support communications with third parties except where required by law.
5. Website
When you visit vanfolio.app, our hosting infrastructure may log standard request data (IP address, browser type, page path, timestamp) for security, abuse prevention, and delivery reliability. This data is not used for advertising and is not sold.
We do not currently use third-party analytics or tracking cookies. If that changes, this section will be updated before any tracking is deployed.
6. What We Do Not Collect
- The content of your Markdown files or vault
- Keystrokes or writing behavior
- Clipboard contents
- Screen recordings or screenshots
- Device usage patterns or behavioral analytics
7. Data Retention
We retain purchase and license records for as long as legally required for accounting and tax purposes. Support emails are retained for as long as needed to resolve your issue and comply with applicable law.
To request deletion of your data, contact us at support@vanfolio.app. Requests to delete financial records may be limited by legal obligations.
8. Your Rights
Depending on your location, you may have the right to:
- Access — request a copy of personal data we hold about you
- Correction — request correction of inaccurate information
- Deletion — request deletion of your data (subject to legal retention obligations)
- Portability — request your data in a portable format
- Objection — object to certain processing activities
To exercise any of these rights, contact us at support@vanfolio.app.
9. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy when product features change or legal requirements evolve. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page reflects the most recent revision. Significant changes that affect your rights will be communicated through the app or by email if you are a registered purchaser.
